Introduction
The launch of the Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Project 2 (KISIP2) marks a significant milestone in the county's efforts to improve the living conditions and access to basic services for residents of informal settlements. With a budget of Kshs. 1.5 Billion, this project aims to enhance tenure security and strengthen institutional capacity for upgrading informal settlements.
The Second Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Program, funded by the World Bank, is being implemented across 33 counties, with Homa Bay County among the beneficiaries in the infrastructure component. The program aims to improve the living conditions of slum dwellers.
Infrastructure upgrades will take place in six informal settlements: Shauri Yako, Makongeni, Sofia, 1000 Streets in Oyugis, Nyandiwa, and Rusinga. These settlements will benefit from the following improvements:
- Upgrading several roads to bitumen standards - Enhancing water reticulation systems in Shauri Yako and Rusinga.- Installing solar high masts for better lighting.- Constructing vending platforms for local vendors in Shauri Yako and Nyandiwa- Improving drainage systems to manage stormwater.- Installing solar street lights for improved security and energy efficiency.
Economic Benefit
The upgrading of informal settlements through the construction of roads, footpaths, storm water drainage, street lighting, water, and sanitation infrastructure will create a conducive environment for economic activities. Improved accessibility and basic services will attract investments, fostering the growth of small businesses and creating employment opportunities for the residents. Additionally, a healthier living environment will contribute to a more productive workforce, driving economic growth in the county.
Citizen Benefit
The KISIP2 project will have a profound impact on the lives of residents in participating informal settlements, including Kijijini in Kendu Bay Old Town, Shauri Yako, Sofia, Makongeni, A thousand streets, Rusinga Old town, and Nyandiwa. Improved access to basic services, such as water and sanitation, will enhance the overall well-being and quality of life for these communities. Furthermore, the provision of tenure security will empower residents, fostering a sense of ownership and encouraging long-term investment in their neighborhoods.
