Our History.
Homa Bay County is a county in the former Nyanza Province of Kenya. Its capital and largest town is Homa Bay. The county has a population of 1,131,950 (2019 census) and an area of 3,154.7 km2. Lake Victoria is a major source of livelihood for Homa Bay County. It has 40 wards, each represented by an MCA to the assembly in Homa Bay town as its headquarters.
A brief history of Homa Bay
Located in the Southern part of Nyanza, along the southern shores of Lake Victoria- Africa’s largest Fresh water lake. Known for its scenic hills and picturesque shoreline, Homa Bay County covers an area of 3,183.3 sq km with a population of about 1.3m million people.
1920 - 1963
Homa Bay County, located in western Kenya, has a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century. During the colonial era, the region was predominantly inhabited by the Luo community, known for their fishing and agricultural practices. The area experienced significant changes due to the arrival of British colonialists, who established administrative structures and introduced cash crops like cotton and sisal.
1963 - 1990
Homa Bay County witnessed a transformative period following Kenya's independence in 1963. The region actively participated in the struggle for freedom and played a crucial role in the fight against colonial rule. With the establishment of a democratic government, Homa Bay County experienced increased investment in infrastructure, education, and healthcare. The county's agricultural sector expanded, with emphasis on cash crops such as sugarcane, maize, and coffee.
1991 - 2010
The 1990s and early 2000s marked a period of political and economic change in Homa Bay County. The county became a hotspot for political activities and witnessed the emergence of influential leaders including late Thomas Joseph Mboya, who advocated for community development. Efforts were made to improve infrastructure, including roads, schools, and healthcare facilities. The fishing industry continued to play a crucial role in the county's economy, with Lake Victoria providing abundant fish resources.
2011 - Present
In recent years, Homa Bay County has seen significant development and progress across various sectors. The county government has focused on initiatives to enhance agricultural productivity, promote tourism, and improve healthcare services. Efforts have been made to diversify the economy beyond agriculture, encouraging entrepreneurship and attracting investments. Infrastructure projects, including road networks and electricity connectivity, have been prioritized to enhance connectivity within the county and with neighboring regions.
