Introduction
Residents
of Ndhiwa sub county will benefit from a new maternal and newborn healthcare
unit at Ndhiwa sub-county hospital, which was built and equipped with a
KES36.9m investment by the M-Pesa Foundation and AMREF Health Africa, in
partnership with the county government.
Economic Benefit
By reducing maternal and child mortality rates, this project can
indirectly contribute to economic growth by increasing the productivity of
women and the health of children, leading to lower healthcare costs and
a more educated and skilled workforce in the future.
Citizen Benefit
The
initiative aims to improve access to quality healthcare for women and children
under five, and reduce mortality rates in the region. Safaricom Foundation
renovated the newborn unit at the county referral hospital to increase
accommodation from 10 to 35 babies. Other partners involved in the Uzazi Salama
programme include Pathfinder International, PharmAccess Africa, Action Aid and
Gertrude’s Children Hospital.
