The County Government of Homa Bay has taken a major step to revive cotton farming with the distribution of farm inputs worth Ksh 14,965,500 under Governor Gladys Wanga’s “Pamba Mwandu” campaign.
The consignment includes 2,500 kilograms of BT cotton seeds, 7,500 units of pesticides, and 11 spray pumps, distributed to 19 cotton cooperatives across the county. The initiative, implemented in partnership with the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) – Fibre Crops Directorate, is expected to directly benefit over 2,500 farmers and restore Homa Bay’s position as a leading cotton-producing region in Kenya.
Kipasi Cooperative in Lambwe Ward, Suba North Sub-county, emerged as the largest beneficiary, receiving 400 kilograms of seeds, 1,200 units of pesticides, one spray pump, and support for 400 farmers. Dhok Mit Cooperative in West Karachuonyo Ward followed closely with 300 kilograms of seeds, 900 units of pesticides, and one spray pump targeting 300 farmers.
Other benefiting cooperatives include Huma, Rhino, Nokiwe, Nyalikinyi, Koredo Aros, Gari, Kibiri, Kaluya, Kochia, Kanyada, Pala, Kimira, Mama Pamba, Wang’ Chieng, Kendu Bay Farmers, Nyakongo, and Lambwe. Under the programme, each farmer receives one kilogram of BT cotton seed and 150 millilitres of pesticides, while spray pumps will be shared among registered members. The county government expects the intervention to increase productivity, reduce production costs, strengthen the cotton value chain, and create new employment opportunities in rural areas.
