Mbita Municipality

Mbita is a town in Homa Bay County, Kenya, located on the shores of Lake Victoria. It houses the Thomas Odhiambo campus of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), along with a public high school and a sub county hospital. Since 2005, Mbita has had access to water and electricity. With an urban population of 62,974, the town is experiencing rapid growth due to factors like urbanization, technology adoption, electrification, trade, and education.

people within the town boundaries and around 11,000 people in the very central parts.

Mbita was the capital of the former Suba District and can be reached by road or ferry. It's a fishing hub, but tourism is emerging as a new trade due to improved road connections. A tourist resort named Lake Victoria Safari Village and Mfangano Island Camp are situated about 3 km south of the town, reachable by ferry. Additionally, Ruma National Park is a short drive away, and a causeway connects Mbita to Rusinga Island, built in 2017.
