Representatives from various departments of the County Government of Homa Bay, Civil Society Organizations, humanitarian actors, and key stakeholders convened at Mbita Tourist Hotel for a four-day workshop aimed at developing a comprehensive Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Communication Strategy for the county.
The workshop brought together experts and practitioners drawn from disaster management, communication, health, environment, water, education, and emergency response sectors to deliberate on practical approaches to strengthening disaster communication systems in Homa Bay County.
The engagement, facilitated by European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations and Kenya Red Cross Society, provided a collaborative platform for participants to identify communication gaps, emerging risks, and opportunities for coordinated disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and resilience building.
Discussions focused on the importance of timely, accurate, and inclusive communication before, during, and after disasters, particularly in vulnerable communities affected by floods, drought, disease outbreaks, and other emergencies.
Participants also explored strategies for community engagement, media coordination, early warning dissemination, stakeholder collaboration, and the use of digital and traditional communication channels in disaster management.
Once finalized, the DRR Communication Strategy will serve as a critical framework for strengthening coordinated response mechanisms and building resilient, informed, and prepared communities across Homa Bay County.
