Governor Gladys Wanga has hosted the third edition of her administration’s mentorship programme for students at Ogenya Girls High School, where she urged young people to prioritise education, discipline, and responsible decision-making in the face of emerging digital challenges, including artificial intelligence.

The Governor’s Mentorship Camp Girls’ Edition brought together over 4,000 students from girls’ and mixed secondary schools across Homa Bay County. The event was graced by Susan Nakhumicha, Kenya’s Permanent Representative to UN-Habitat and former Cabinet Secretary, alongside women leaders and professionals from diverse fields who shared experiences to inspire and guide the learners.

The forum addressed key issues affecting adolescents, including teenage pregnancies, new HIV infections, sexual and gender-based violence, cyber risks, and the impact of harmful online content. Speakers emphasised the role of mentorship, strong values, parental guidance, and community support in shaping a resilient generation.

Participants also received training in financial literacy, digital skills, health awareness, and career development, with a strong emphasis on integrity, accountability, and personal responsibility.

The mentorship programme traces its roots to 2016 when Governor Wanga, then the Woman Representative for Homa Bay County, launched the initiative under the “Mama County Says” campaign. Since 2023, it has been institutionalised as the Governor’s Mentorship Camp and expanded to include a boys’ edition, with the second boys’ camp scheduled for later this year.

Governor Wanga noted encouraging progress in the fight against teenage pregnancies, citing the Kenya Economic Survey Report 2026, which, for the first time, did not rank Homa Bay among the top five counties with the highest prevalence. The report listed Nairobi, Kakamega County, Narok County, Bungoma County, and Migori County as the most affected.

The event, held in Rachuonyo North Sub-County, was also attended by Ochilo Ayacko, Lilian Gogo, and other local leaders.
