The Fins to Swim Scholarship program is more than just a financial aid initiative; it’s a lifeline that empowers students from disadvantaged backgrounds across Homa Bay County to pursue their dreams through high school education. Established to provide opportunities and nurture aspirations for bright but needy financially constrained students, the program has opened doors for many young minds, offering them a chance to excel both academically and in life.
Take the story of Evans Anan, a bright and determined Form One student at Homa Bay High School. Hailing from Kanyamwa Kosewe, Evans was raised in a modest mud-walled home. His parents, small-scale farmers, struggle to make ends meet, their meager income barely enough to cover daily needs, let alone the cost of education. Despite these challenges, Evans nurtured a dream of becoming a doctor, but his family’s financial struggles threatened to derail his aspirations.
The Fins to Swim Scholarship came as a beacon of hope for Evans, covering all his expenses and allowing him to focus on his studies and dream. Today, he stands out as one of the top performers in his class, driven by the desire to one day give back to his community by offering medical care to those in need.
Similarly, Idah Awuor’s journey is one of resilience and ambition. A student at Kisumu Girls and a native of Ongeng, Mirogi, Ida’s life took a positive turn when she received the Fins to Swim Scholarship. Despite facing numerous challenges, including the loss of a parent, she remained steadfast in her educational pursuit. The scholarship has enabled her to continue her education without the constant worry of school fees, allowing her to focus on her passion for science. She dreams of becoming an engineer, inspired by her love for solving problems and her determination to break barriers for girls in STEM fields.
These stories of Evans and Ida are just two among many, showcasing the profound impact that the Fins to Swim Scholarship is making in shaping the future of young students in Homa Bay and beyond.
The Fins to Swim Scholarship program has so far benefitted 598 young boys and girls across the county. The Scholarship program ensures that every expense required to keep a child in school is met. It covers tuition, uniform, shopping, pocket money and any other statutory expenses for the entire four years in high school.
