In a move to boost the local economy and support small-scale entrepreneurs, Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga has unveiled a Boda Boda Sacco Grant under the ‘Inunua Boda Boda initiative’.

The program, launched at Raila Odinga stadium on Friday, aims to provide financial support to boda boda riders across the county's 40 wards.

Speaking during the launch exercise, Governor Wanga stated that the county government distributed a total of 20 million Kenyan shillings to 20 ward Saccos, with each receiving 1 million shillings.

“This marks the initiative's first phase, which is set to expand to cover all 40 wards in the county,” Wanga said.

The governor emphasized that the program's primary objective is to offer affordable loans to boda boda operators, who often fall prey to high interest rates from unregulated micro-lenders.

"This milestone marks the start of a journey to empower the boda boda sector by establishing a revolving fund to facilitate access to affordable credit, enabling operators to grow and enhance their businesses," she added.

The initiative has been met with enthusiasm from the boda boda community. Riders present at the launch expressed their gratitude, highlighting the potential benefits of accessing loans at more favorable interest rates.

Mr. Ken Dede, a rider commented, "We have been victims of exorbitant loans from micro-lenders for a long time. With our Governor's initiative, we are now happy we will access loans at friendly rates through the Inua Boda Boda Sacco initiative."

The boda boda sector plays a crucial role in Homa Bay County's economy, providing employment opportunities for many young people.

Governor Wanga's administration appears committed to nurturing this sector, recognizing its potential for fostering self-employment and economic growth in the region.

As the program unfolds, it will be interesting to observe its impact on the local boda boda industry and the broader economic landscape of Homa Bay County.
